I Survived the Dangerzone

Dangerzone Top Gun T Shirt

For any child of the 80s Top Gun had to be one of the coolest films ever, it’s got everything a 16 year old would want, Maverick with his lone wolf attitude and refusal to submit to authority, F-14s, motorbikes, aviator shades, hot women, faceless evil Russian (we assume) MiG-28s, cool names like “Iceman”, “Viper”, “Cougar”, “Stinger” and errr “Goose”

The film starts on the USS Enterprise (no not Picard’s one), during an interception of two hostile MiG-28s of unspecified origin, Tom Cruise as Maverick saves the day, gets rid of them and has to shepard his wingman Cougar back to the carrier as he is too shaken to land. Cougar gives up his wings due to his newborn child he’s never seen showing this is no place for family men.

While the films tries to have some moral compass and some meaning (you have to squint to see the fairly one dimensional attempt at it) it’s all really about boys and their toys (yes that was supposed read like that). Maverick has to confront the death of his good friend Goose, something he could have clearly predicted if he’d ever watched a film like this before, just think about that maverick, lone wolf cop with a need for speed, who breaks all the rules, Max Rockatansky (with his cool name being ‘Mad Max’) and his friendly likable sidekick who just happens to be called Goose who is having a lovely time until he, err dies.

But never mind that, Maverick has a job to do, he has to put his days of being a dick an leaving his wingman and live up to his duties, while all the time dealing with his arch rival Iceman. But guess what, he turns it all around and even the icy Iceman (see what I did there?) comes round to him and his renegade heroics, so much so as he pronounces “You can be my wingman anytime” and that I think is the highest endorsement you could ever get from someone like Iceman.

But one of the most memorable things about this film is it’s pure 80s cheese, you just couldn’t get away with making a film like Top Gun in any other era. Take my Breath Away by Berlin takes care of the romantic music, but it’s Kenny Loggins who takes Top Gun into 80s overdrive, in fact he takes it right up the Highway to the Danger Zone!
I mean could you get more 80s than lines like “She got you jumpin’ off the deck
And shovin’ into overdrive”
Or “You’ll never say hello to you, until you get it on the red line overload” non of it really makes sense, sounds more like a Gillette advert full of meaningless words that men like, such as “overdrive” and “red line overload” but that’s what makes it great.

Do you think you could survive the Danger Zone? Well here is the Danger Zone in all it’s 80s glory:

[Verse 1]
Revvin’ up your engine
Listen to her howlin’ roar
Metal under tension
Beggin’ you to touch and go

[Chorus 1]
Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone

[Verse 2]
Headin’ into twilight
Spreadin’ out her wings tonight
She got you jumpin’ off the deck
And shovin’ into overdrive

[Chorus 2]
Highway to the Danger Zone
I’ll take you right into the Danger Zone

[Bridge]
You’ll never say hello to you
Until you get it on the red line overload
You’ll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go

Out along the edges
Always where I burn to be
The further on the edge
The hotter the intensity

[Chorus 3]
Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take it right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone

[Chorus 3]
Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take it right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone!

Oh, yes, and there is that other Kenny Loggins song, with this film appealing to men who must prove they like things like F-14s, motorbikes, aviator shades, hot women, surely no one will notice the “Playing with the Boys” bit… yeah the bit where they get oiled up and flex their muscles whilst playing volleyball with the boys, I’ll let you watch the video to make your mind up:

An I said you couldn’t make this film in any other era than the 80s, well perhaps I was wrong, perhaps the 2020s are going to be the new decade of cheese. Yep you guessed it, Top Gun 2 is on the way, Top Gun: Maverick
